Australian Mountain Bike

Summer is here, and that means it’s time to look up high for our mountain bike adventures. You’ve got our 4th Alpine Issue in your hands. It’s become a bit of a tradition after the first one we put out in early 2015. Some people wonder what the obsession with the high mountains is. I have often said that you don’t need mountains for mountain biking, but it’s always better when you’re in them.

Riding in alpine areas gives you the chance to get up high, above the tree line, above the crowds, and away from the worries of work or home. You tend to be more engaged with your surroundings, thinking more about where you are, what the conditions are doing, and how to best use your time. Riding up high is usually more about limiting yourself in a big environment, and less about being limited by your environment. Every ride can bring happiness, but I think that rides on trails that stretch to the valleys below, in crisp mountain air with big views and so many turns that you forget your favourite one is what makes a truly epic mountain bike experience.

Year on year the options for Australian mountain bikers grow, and in this issue we’re looking at alpine riding at home and abroad, from fully serviced trails to making your own way. Plus there is still killer product and bike tests and tips from some of the best in the business out the back end of the mag. Best of all, our 5th Alpine Issue will be out later in summer, as there is too much good stuff going on to contain it all in one issue. For now, I hope you enjoy this issue, get some time to ride in high places this summer – or make a plan to do so soon.
