CHRISTOPHER JEFFERYS PEDALLING FOR A CAUSE
Christopher Jefferys was an ordinary kid in 2009 with an extraordinary vision to “help people who research things”. He had heard about a local boy called Pierce who suffered from a rare form of Congenital Muscular Dystrophy. So Christopher’s plan was to help in the only way he could think of – by riding his bike. With the assistance of his parents, Rebecca and Nigel, and his brother Ashley, he founded the charity ‘Pedal 4 Pierce’.
Fast forward seven years and Pedal 4 Pierce has changed a whole host of children’s lives in the ACT and NSW. By participating at races and organising fundraising events in Canberra, he has been able to donate money to the Sydney Children’s Hospital and University of Canberra research teams to find a cure for Muscular Dystrophy. In cooperation with the NSW Muscular Dystrophy Association, Pedal 4 Pierce has funded the purchase of two cough assist machines. Chris, now 18, is working as a carpentry apprentice during the week and racing his mountain bike on the weekends, travelling with his dad Nigel and his team-mates to events. He will continue to ‘Pedal 4 Pierce’ and will stage two more major events in Canberra - a fight night to ‘Muscle Up for Muscular Dystrophy’, as well as a ‘Dance for Dystrophy’.
The upcoming AMB 100 Marathon on 23 April at Stromlo Forest Park will mark the anniversary of Chris’ first ever mountain bike race. And event organisers from Rocky Trail Entertainment have promised to donate one dollar for each racer at this year’s event to Pedal 4 Pierce.
