What’s in a glove? Given the disparity between what people want in a glove – the answer isn’t straightforward. Some people prefer no gloves for a direct feel to the bar, others want something very light, and some want dense gel padding. As two of your five contact points with your bike, it’s worth making sure your glove and grip combination is exactly what you want if you’re after the best comfort and control. I prefer a basic full-finger glove with a cuff-less design, and the new Gripp Light FF from Hirzl provides just that. With a light four-way stretch back and mesh between the fingers, they are a very breathable glove - but the real drawcard is the light Kangaroo leather palm, which is seamless for complete comfort. In terms of fit I found the XL to be spot on, although I normally stretch into a medium in something like a Troy Lee XC. Hirzl claim it’s as close to a glove free feeling as possible. And I would agree. Even in warm Queensland conditions they didn’t feel sweaty, and they are wearing quite well – although the white mesh between the fingers isn’t as crisp as it used to be. There’s a tab to help pull them on and off but otherwise the cuff less design is very comfortable – there is a nose wipe, but really this glove is pared back to the essentials. The leather palm has a great tactile feel, but is best suited to rubber or silicone grips. I found it’s not as grippy as you might think on a foam grip. It’s acceptable, but noticeably different to something like a Clarino leather palm. But otherwise, in wet and dry conditions, this is a fantastic glove for the minimalists.
