An eagle-eyed AMC reader spotted this classic decal (also known as a transfer) listed on eBay with a buy-it-now price of $30. The Mighty Saints transfer (that’s St Kilda for those who don’t follow the AFL) features an Ed Roth-style cartoon of a Holden Monaro.
It was part of the Admiral Football Transfer series produced in the late 1960s. Different cars were used for each VFL team and a separate series was produced for the NSW Rugby League teams. These were designed to be fixed on the rear window of your car.
The transfer was listed by Gardenvale Collectables in Melbourne, a shop that specialises in sports memorabilia. Owner Mario Lo’Po says that Admiral transfers have previously sold for up to $60 each before a large stockpile was found in an old toy shop. According to the laws of supply and demand their value has since dropped.
Saints fans who drive Monaros, or vice versa, should phone Mario, on (03) 9596 0211 and see if this Saints transfer has already been snapped up. He has other examples for other teams, including one for The Rabbitohs.
