LJ XU-1 Production

importance of motor racing to Holden was evidenced by John Bagshaw’s request to have LJ ‘Start of Production’ moved forward from the initial date of February 25,1972 to January 19. The first round of the South Pacific Touring Car Series was on March 6, and a minimum of 200 cars had to be built prior to March 1, in order to meet CAMS homologation requirements.

There were a number of amendments to homologation throughout the racing life of the LJ.

A total of 1393 LJ XU-1s were produced in 1972. Only seven XU-1s were completed in July – preparation for the forthcoming V8 XU-1 would account for this low volume. Two hundred were built in August. The 200 Bathurst-spec cars were produced in September 1972. freedoms for racing compared to Series Production that had contested the Bathurst classic to that point, however there was still a need for homologation of minimum build numbers.

The most obvious visual change for ’73 was the freedom of wheels, which allowed the Torana GTR XU-1 to go from 6” wide wheels to 8” front and 9” rear wheels. There were changes under the bonnet too, most notably the replacement of the standard trio of single-barrel Stromberg

1973 saw a further 786 XU-1s produced, bringing the total number of LJ XU-1s produced to 2179. The 150 Bathurst specials were built in August and September. The final Adelaideproduced XU-1 was completed on September 18, 1973 with the date of completion of the final Brisbane built XU-1 being November 19. John Bagshaw 175CDs with three 58mm DCOE Webers.

Allan Moffat and GT-HO Phase III’s domination of the first four rounds gave him a championship lead that Brock and the HDT could not peg back, despite the XU-1 winning three of the final four rounds of the series.

The factory Ford team’s new-shape XA hardtops were coming on-stream for the 1973 endurance season, but HDT chief Harry Firth still had an ace up his sleeve ahead of the biggest event of the year. Our pristine feature car proves that 1973 Bathurst XU-1s came in colours other than white, a common misconception about these cars.
