In that context the time was ripe for a buyer’s guide covering significan­t but under-appreciate­d Aussie muscle cars of the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, which highlighte­d the fact you could own one of those Bathurst legends for less than $20,000 (which seems ludicrous today). By choosing a Ford and Holden model from each of those decades, models which at the time were flying below the radar, it would also give us six cars that would form the basis of that first cover.

Led by fine original examples of the cars that started the Aussie muscle car legend, Ron Fraser’s XR Falcon GT and Rob Losurdo’s HK Monaro GTS 327, we wanted that first cover to portray these classics bursting back into our lives. Or to quote the last sentence of my first column: “We’ve got a long open road ahead of us so jump in, tighten your belts and hang on. This is going to be a great drive.”
