Punters pics
AMC readers’ pics of the dramatic nal day of the ‘68 London-Sydney Marathon.
Bob is the father of AMC advertising manager Cameron Davis and he took these shots on the 1968 London to Sydney Marathon’s last competitive stage, near Nowra, on the NSW South Coast. Bob was part of the service control run by BMC Australia that provided spare parts for the British Leyland, BMC Australia and Royal Navy-entered Austin 1800s. Bob recalls doing speci c training at BMC Australia HQ at Zetland, in inner Sydney, to familiarise the local crew with the rally-spec con guration of 1800s. Despite being across the different ‘species’ of Land Crab, Bob and his colleagues had an easy time as none required any service prior to the nal road run to the Warwick Farm nish. He remembers Paddy Hopkirk (second overall) waved to the crew with Rauno Aaltonen ( fth) stopping purely for a chat. The images of the destroyed Bianchi Citroen and the offending result-changing Mini were captured as they were towed in to the service control off the stage.
