Still at it There were two!
Thomson and Sheldon both still reside in the Newcastle region, and while both are retired, they remain active in motorsport. Thomson owns and still races a Tornado Talisman, one of only four of these rare early ‘60s British sports coupes in Australia. Sheldon is currently building himself a HQ Holden track machine – a former HQ series sixcylinder racer with a 7.0-litre Chev heart transplant.
We were curious that the ‘eyewitness’ accounts of the Molden – describing an evil handling car – differed so much from the recollections of Sheldon and Thomson. Indeed, the Super-8 lm footage (above insets) of the Molden at Oran Park shows what looks like a well-mannered machine.
Upon further investigation, however, we learned that there was a second Holdenengined Mini Sports Sedan! This black machine was presumably what our eyewitnesses saw. It’s said that this car used a VW transaxle, which might even have made it legal to race. We’d love to hear from anyone who knows more about the other Mini-Holden.
