T56 replacement ‘box

-

The TREMEC T56 was introduced in the early VR, VS and VT1 behind the Holden V8 and then with the Commodore VT Series II in late 1999, with the 5.7-litre LS1 Chev V8 engine. It was discontinued at the end of 2006 in the VZ, making way for a T56 in a different format for the VE from 2006 to 2008 and then progressing to the TR-6060 sixspeed with the release of the VE Series II.

Now owners of LS1-powered VT-VZ Commodores can upgrade from their old T56s to the new TREMEC Magnum-F – effectively a later model TR-6060 redesigned to t the LS1 engine.

Apart from the Magnum-F being a better transmission (and with a far superior shift action), it’s a solution for the growing problem of replacement parts availability for a transmission that’s been out of production for almost 15 years.

And for owners of supercharged or modi ed LS1s, the Magnum series offers the durability that was lacking in the T-56 – the Magnum has the capability to handle twice the power the earlier transmission could.

The new Magnum transmission is a straight t in all VT-through VZ models – although it requires a new tailshaft (which Mal Wood Automotive manufacturers especially) to accept the Magnum’s 31-spline output shaft, as well as a Mal Wood Automotive Ultimate Street Short Throw shifter (an upgrade which AMC can thoroughly endorse, having tried one to the editorial VY SS…).
