The diet band wagon continues to roll into town delivering low calorie liquid diets that are totally unsustainable long term. Some of these low cal liquid disaster zones have barely enough calories to fuel a cat or dog. The marketers of these plans are targetting the lazy folk who wish to lose weight yesterday and do not have the discipline to make permanent lifestyle changes. Unfortunately the weight lost is made up of mainly water weight and more than likely lean muscle tissue from lack of solid protein foods that the body needs to maintain itself. Another point that needs to be clarified is liquid has no thermogenic value, meaning your body does not expend any energy to metabolize it. Where as solid foods especially protein and vegetables require a fair amount of energy and there for have a high thermogenic value. The digestion process is part of your (RMR) resting metabolic rate where 70% of your daily calories are burned. Take home message, take the time to PREPARE and EAT solid meals instead of taking the easy way out with liquid meal replacements. You will feel fuller for it and reveal a leaner more athletic physique!
