Sigma To Offer Art Lenses In Sony FE Mount
It’s a sign of the growing importance of Sony’s Fe mount full-35mm mirrorless camera system that many of the independent lenses makers are introducing compatible products. And it’s a significant boost for the system that Sigma has announced nine its much-awarded Art line lenses will be available in the Fe mount soon.
Sigma’s Art line lenses boast a very high level of quality – both physically and optically – which has seen them compared favourably with products from both leica and Zeiss. Seven existing Art line primes – covering 14mm to 135mm – will be in the new Fe mount line-up, plus the two new models that Sigma has just announced – the 70mm f2.8 DG macro Art and the 105mm f1.4 DG HSm Art. Additionally, Sigma says it plans to offer yet more Fe mount versions of Art lenses in the future.
Sigma has obtained a licensing agreement with Sony which means the Fe mount Art lenses will be fully compatible with the A7 and A9 series mirrorless cameras, including the ‘Fast Hybrid AF’ continuous autofocusing mode, the in-body image stabilisation, and in-camera lens corrections – for peripheral illumination (vignetting), chromatic aberrations and distortion.
No details about availability have been announced yet, the Fe Art lines will be the 14mm f1.8, 20mm f1.4, 24mm f1.4, 35mm f1.4, 50mm f1.4, 85mm f1.4 and 135mm f1.8 plus the two new models noted earlier. The 70mm f2.8 is the first macro lens in the Art line and delivers true 1:1 reproduction (i.e. life size) plus it has a weather-sealed external construction. The new 105mm f1.4 model also has a weather-sealed construction and Sigma is promising it will deliver “incredible resolution” and “exceptional peripheral brightness”. In addition to the Sony Fe mount, both new lenses will be available in Sigma and Canon mounts while the 105mm will also be offered in the Nikon mount (in other words, the macro lens won’t be available for Nikon D-SlRs).
