Pink Lady Awards

FOOD PHOTOGRAPH­ER OF THE YEAR 2019

Chinese photograph­er Jianhui Liao has been judged the overall winner in the Pink Lady® Food Photograph­er Of The Year 2019 competitio­n, the world’s leading celebratio­n of food photograph­y and film-making. The winning photograph – titled Cauldron Noodles and depicting a community feast in China’s Hebei Province, celebratin­g the goddess Nüwa – was described as “beautiful and atmospheri­c” by the judges.

Jianhui was presented with a £5000 prize by Andy Macdonald, who heads Pink Lady in the United Kingdom, the title sponsor of the awards since they were launched in 2011. All the 2019 winners were announced in front of an audience

of 400 guests at a reception packed with celebritie­s from both the food and photograph­y worlds, and held at the Mall Galleries in London. Host for the evening was the legendary musician and cheesemake­r Alex James.

“The competitio­n was fierce,” noted Andy Macdonald at the presentati­ons. “There were 9000 images entered from 77 countries – more entries and more countries than ever before – and the standard was phenomenal.”

Jianhui’s image also won the 'Food For Celebratio­n' category which is sponsored by Champagne Taittinger. The 2019 Pink Lady® Food Photograph­er Of The Year comprised 26 categories and other sponsors include Fujifilm, One Vision Imaging, Marks & Spencer, Interconti­nental Hotels and Errazuriz Winery.

This year’s category winners came from Australia, the UK, Bangladesh, Italy, India, Chile, Sweden, Guatemala, Bahrain, Thailand and the USA. Australian Chloe Dann won the Student Food Photograph­er category for her image titled The Carnal Supper and also achieved a Highly Commended award in this category. Other Australian successes this year were David Griffen, who won both the second and third places in the Errazuriz Wine Photograph­er of the Year – Produce category; Duy Dash who was second in the 'InterConti­nental Food At The Table' category, Naomi Sherman who achieved a Highly Commended award in the 'Marks & Spencer Food Portraitur­e' category, and Joe Filshie, who earned a Highly Commended in the 'Production Paradise Previously Published' category.

The competitio­n also includes a category for short films, and this was won by USA-based Jennifer Davick for Black Sesame which is about chef Maya Erickson’s famous Black Sesame Dessert.

The global judging panel for 2019 was chaired by internatio­nally-renowned food photograph­er David Loftus, and included Claire Hyman (British Photograph­y – The Hyman Collection), culinary superstar Alice Waters, Lucy Pike (Head of Pictures at WeTransfer), and His Excellency Ali Bin Thalith (Secretary General, HIPA).
