The Technical Image Press Association (TIPA) has announced the winning imaging products in its annual TIPA World Awards which covers 40 categories. The global group of photography magazines currently has 28 members – including our sister publication
Australian Camera – from around the world including USA, Canada, Brazil, China, India, Germany, Italy, France, Spain, Greece and the United Kingdom. The representatives of these publications recently convened in Bangkok to judge the short-listed products in this year’s awards. A sign of the times is that there was only one specific D-SLR category this year – as there was only one new eligible product – versus seven for mirrorless cameras. Consequently, a revising of the camera categories for 2019 sees them now defined by sensor size rather than body type.
Perhaps not so surprisingly, the new crop of full-35mm mirrorless cameras featured prominently in the 2019 awards with the Nikon Z 6 and Z 7, Panasonic Lumix S1 and Canon EOS RP all winning categories. Olympus’s new OM-D flagship, the E-M1X, was judged best Best MFT Camera Professional, while the Fujifilm GFX 50R won the award for Best Medium Format Camera. The notable winners in 2019 include Sigma, which picked up three awards in the lens categories, Canon which also won three lens categories in addition to the EOS RP, and Sony which collected four awards for its A6400 mirrorless camera, the 135mm f1.8 and 400mm f2.8 OSS G Master lenses, and the new SF-G Tough series memory cards.
