Olympus has issued a firmware upgrade for its E-M1X OM-D flagship, adding a bird detection mode to the camera’s AI-based Intelligent Subject Detection AF system. In this mode, the camera automatically prioritises the detection of a bird’s eye for focusing and tracking. It will also work with the ‘Pro Capture’ pre-release function which buffers 35 frames in a rolling sequence when the shutter release is pressed to its halfway position (i.e. for focusing and metering). The bird mode is added to the existing ones for motorsport, aircraft and trains. Firmware upgrade version 2.0 also adds the capacity to output 12-bit RAW video via HDMI – 4K UHD or 4K DCI – which is recorded in the ProRes RAW format on the Atomos Ninja V HDR monitorrecorder.
