MSI GS60 2PC Ghost

- $2,549, MSI.COM

A slimline contender with some killer moves up its sleeve

MSI’s previous gaming laptop was the bulky GS70 Stealth, but for the Ghost it’s slimmed things down considerably. This is the thinnest and lightest 15.6-inch gaming notebook on the market, no less, measuring 19.9mm thick and weighing under 2kg. Compared to other laptops in this test, the difference is instantly noticeable; you’ll have no trouble carrying this around in your bag all day. The black, brushed metal casing matches the slimline looks, but the whole thing still manages to feel robust.

The extra inches carved off of the build have not affected the spec under the bonnet. You get the same Intel Core i7 quadcore processor as rivals, with Nvidia GeForce GT X 860M graphics giving an encouraging performance. The Ghost will happily play the latest games with minimal lag and maximum enjoyment factor. Add to this a keyboard supplied by famed peripheral manufacturer SteelSeries and pre-installed X-Split live streaming, which lets you broadcast your gaming successes to Twitch and YouTube in an instant, and you’ve got a lot of gaming oomph on hand.

Alas, there are shortcomings to report as well. The slim chassis means that there’s not much space for a beefy battery, and as a result the machine’s stamina is something of a letdown, powering down around the three-hour mark. The black metal casing, while easy on the eye, also picks up fingermarks all too readily. Finally, the audio quality is weak, an inevitable consequence of such a svelte frame.

If you’re looking for a seriously portable gaming laptop, then those compromises should be quite easy to make. When it comes to the important spec essentials, the GS60 Ghost has what it takes to get near the top of the table. The price is pretty reasonable, too. A solid showing. Love Slim design. Up-to-scratch gaming performance. Excellent HD display Hat e Sound is weak. Short battery life.
