I’ve moved house and finally have a room (though small) for a dedicated home cinema. What kit should I buy for it?

If you want to supersize your movies, opt for an Ultra Short Throw 1080p projector rather than a TV. The Optoma GT5500+ ($1,800, optoma.com) casts 100-inch images from just 30cm. Small rooms are also a doddle for audio. Polk’s Command Bar ($619, polkaudio.com) is a gutsy stereo soundbar with integrated Amazon Alexa functionality.

If you want to go multi-channel, audition Q Acoustics’ 7000i system ($999. qacoustics.co.uk). The speakers are compact and integrate beautifully with the Q Acoustics 7000si subwoofer giving cinematic sound. Power them with a Sony STR-DN1080 Dolby Atmos AV receiver ($1,199, sony.com.au).

Amazon’s Fire TV with 4K Ultra HD ($145, amazon.com.au), Panasonic’s DMP-UB300 UHD Blu-ray player ($259, panasonic.com.au), both make fine 4K sources.
