The sandstone caves around Laura harbour some of Australia’s most spectacular rock art, particularly known for its ‘Quinkan’ renderings. Fitting then, that the nascent Cape York Acquisitive Art Awards, open to established and emerging Indigenous artists, runs alongside the dance festival, with winners announced on the final day. Some of the competing communities sell their art from stalls during the event too, like the prolific Pormpuraaw Art and Cultural Centre. A few individual emerging artists, such as Cairns-based Steve Murgha, also sell prints and curiosities at more than reasonable prices.
