CITY LIMITS
Street art is now a legitimate and much lauded form of artistic expression; it is also increasingly becoming a tourist attraction in its own right in cities around the world, including Melbourne. From the city’s narrow paint-daubed alleyways to mammoth murals injecting colour and social commentary into the streetscapes of the suburbs, the Victorian capital is an incubator for spray can inspiration. Photographer Lou Chamberlin has been capturing its painted streets for 12 years, committing to posterity this ephemeral art form. Her images and thoughts are gathered together in Burn City (Hardie Grant, $29.99), the perfect guide to getting out and finding some of this exuberant art for yourself.
