FLY OVER LAKE EYRE

-

Officially known as Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre, no matter how you address it, this usually dry lake bed (it fills roughly every eight years but has only been at capacity three times in the past 150 years) is vast, its catchment area covering three states. Given its mind-boggling expanse, one of the best ways to see and fully appreciate it is from above. Direct small plane flights over the shimmering white landscape can be taken from the tiny South Australian town of William Creek (wrightsair.com.au), while others take in the lake as well as the likes of Wilpena Pound and Brachina Gorge (wilpenapound.rezdy.com).
