Getting there

There are regular flights from Australian capital cities to Alice Springs, where you’ll be met by World Expeditions staff to transport you to camp. The company offers guided Larapinta treks of various lengths from April through September, avoiding the NT’s hotter months. All meals, ground transportation, tented accommodation and swags are included. worldexpeditions.com

Trekking there

World Expeditions operates guided treks between the three semi-permanent eco-campsites, taking in highlights of the Larapinta over three to seven days. My experience was more tailored than most, due to the fact there were only 12 hikers as part of a fundraising walk through World Expeditions’ charitable arm, the Huma Charity Challenge. We were raising money for the Luke Batty Foundation, established by Rosie Batty to increase awareness of family violence. humacharitychallenge.com

Preparing for the trek

A moderate level of fitness is required, particularly for the final day when you climb Mt Sonder – it’s a four-hour uphill hike. Preparing for your trek with stair or hill training is advised.
