WALKABOUT
InTassie with Marta Dusseldorp
As a child, our family holidays were always to… Kurrajong, New South Wales (1). We had a holiday house there growing up and it is where my mum and sister, Teya, would ride horses. I was too young to ride so was in charge of feeding the hay to the horses, visiting the neighbours and generally wandering and adventuring in my mind. My local’s tip for hometown Hobart is… Book into some local theatre. Especially see what’s on at the Hedberg Studio (2) – a brand-new theatre space opening in 2020 with our company Archipelago, in co-production with Blue Cow Theatre, presenting The Bleeding Tree by Angus Cerini. Stop by the Bett Gallery for a look into local visual artists and the work they are making. Fico for great European food (3). Frogmore Creek or Lubiano’s for a wine. Moo Brew for beer. A drop by Scotch and Soda for retail relief and a wander along Kingston Beach. if I have time for a short break, I head straight to… Franklin, past Huonville in Tassie, where friends of ours own a great cafe, Cinnamon and Cherry. We go for the drive, have a delicious lunch and then do a walk up and down this small but fascinating town. My last holiday read was… Gun Love (4) by Jennifer Clement. A New York Times Editors’ Choice. If you haven’t, you must. My travel wardrobe always consists of… Helen Kaminski sun hat (5). Lee Mathews cotton shirt and dress. Bally shoulder bag and shoes. Scotch & Soda jacket and jumper. Bassike pants and T-shirt. My souvenir of choice is… One piece of artwork from a local artist or a book recommended by locals. My greatest travel memory is… Going with Abercrombie & Kent on an African safari experience of a lifetime (6) with my two daughters and [husband, the actor, director and producer Ben Winspear] at the beginning of 2019. Part of it was to the Okavango Delta where we stayed in the amazing Chief ’s Camp. We still remember the warm and welcoming people, the shimmering sunsets and the mighty animals of this extraordinary and untouched land. The type of traveller I aspire to be is one that… Steps lightly, learns and listens locally. If I could live anywhere in Australia I would live… In Cygnet, Tasmania (7). In a little house right on the water, with the sound of plovers echoing through my dreams and lapping water.
