TUMBARUMBA

Let a LOCAL show you around their TOWN for an INSIDER’S GUIDE to all the best bits.

NEST CINEMA CAFE BOOKS is a thriving cultural hub dreamt up by Laura Fraumeni in 2009. An old Masonic hall set against a mountain peak backdrop, it’s a destination in itself in the Snowy Valleys town of Tumbarumba, NSW, that does duty as a boutique armchair cinema showing arthouse movies, bookstore and gig space, plus a cafe serving all things local and seasonal that also does a delicious line in Friday night pizzas. Here, Laura walks (and cycles) us through her perfect day in and around town. cafe-nest.com

What it’s all about:

Full to the brim with alpine charms, Tumbarumba – or Tumba, as it’s known to locals – is an idyllic country town set amid a landscape of rolling green hills, farmland and vineyards against a backdrop of mountain peaks. It’s mainland Australia’s coldest-climate wine region, which excels in crisp whites and sparklings (and complements the handcrafted cider produced in the nearby apple-growing region of Batlow). As well as a network of mountain bike trails, the town boasts the country’s newest rail trail: the Tumbarumba to Rosewood Rail Trail was opened in April 2020 and follows 21 kilometres through groves of ghost gums, farmland and vineyards along the region’s original railway line.
