South west women’s refuge centre nearing completion

Balonne Beacon - - NEWS -

AS THE construction of the new south-west women’s shelter enters its final phase, operational co-ordinator Save the Children is providing a number of services and donation drives over the Christmas period.

The new governmentfunded shelter, which will include a number of self-contained units with outdoor areas and on-site staff, is to be completed early next year.

In the interim, Save the Children employees are continuing to provide domestic violence support across the region.

“Although the refuge is still under construction, we as a domestic violence service are functional and running,” Save the Children regional co-ordinator Theresa Kellett said.

“We still have the ability to house people, so whether that is in the Maranoa, Balonne shire or Murweh we are able to provide transport.

“We are also able to provide different support based on the need, we are open to meet and discuss counselling and future planning with residents.

“We encourage people to get in contact with us even if they are unsure.
