Dragons blast fire
BASKETBALL: It was a competition of the best of the west with Roma hosting its’ fourth consecutive annual basketball carnival.
Teams from St George, Mount Isa and Toowoomba descended on Roma for the weekend series for under-13s and U19s.
The U13 Roma Fire was strong on the court, making the final against city team Toowoomba Saints.
In a fight of the fittest, it was the Saints who pushed to the front and dunked their way to become champions.
Maranoa Basketball Association president Mat Gane said it was a thrilling match to watch.
“They both performed well and the final was extremely exciting and Roma ended up only going down by 10 points,” he said.
“Former Roma boys Jolon and Seaby were dominant players in the Saints game.
“Jolon had a stellar game and rebounded really well. He was hard to shut down.”
St George Dragons were the underdogs of the carnival, putting their best team forward in the U19 competition.
After a tough match against Mount Isa Miners, the Dragons came away second best.
“St George ended up beating Maranoa Heat in the semi-final by one point,” Gane said.
“They have been coming to the carnival for four years and had never before made a final.
“They made the final and played a very strong Mount Isa Miners team.
“Unfortunately they fell short but there was still a sense of respect after the game.
“Mount Isa showed real class and strength and a really well drilled, organised and coached team.
“We look forward having them back next year,” he said.
Due to the carnival’s Big Q game falling through, an exhibition match made up of two Roma U13 teams and the Toowoomba Saints was played instead.
“It was probably the highlight of the carnival where the Roma team ended up winning by seven points against the Saints,” Gane said.
“Maranoa is really blessed at the moment with really strong teams in U13s.
“Maranoa is level with Toowoomba clubs and we are seeking more opportunities to play against the Toowoomba clubs.”
Angus Orchison was awarded the Maranoa player of the series after displaying great leadership.
Gane expressed a massive thank you to the volunteers, Toowoomba Basketball, Roma PCYC and their sponsors, especially Santos for making the carnival possible.
