Balonne Beacon - - LIFE -

Monday, go!, 9pm, M (2016)

This thoughtf uls ci-fi film casts Amy Adams (pictured) as linguist Louise Banks, who is tasked with figuring out how to communicate with the aliens who have just landed on Earth in a dozen giant eggshaped pods. As the human race holds its breath, she works with scientist Ian (Jeremy Renner) to uncover the visitors’ answer to the question, “What do you want?”. The aliens’ verbal language is impossible for humans to imitate, so she realises written communication holds the key to the two species understanding each other. Adams holds the whole thing together with an understated performance, and it’s refreshing to see a first-contact film where violence isn’t the answer.
