The Southwest Queensland regional cricket competition kicked off on the weekend, with Roma taking on St George at the Gallas Fox Oval on Saturday evening.

O’Brien Toyota Player of the Match went to St George’s spearhead bowler Tom McDonnell who battled well with the ball to restrict Roma batsmen to 218 from 40 overs.

McDonnell managed to bag figures of 7/28 off his seven overs and put St George in with a great chance to grab a win away from home.

Unfortunately for St George, the trend continued in the second innings and it turned out to be a day for the bowlers with St George batsmen up failing to reach the target.

There were strong batting displays from opener Wally Bell, 25 runs, and Dugald McIntosh in the middle order notching up 52 runs.

But it was never going to be enough, with the Roma bowlers coming home strongest, dismissing St George for 133.

BOWLING OUT: St George bowled first, bowling out Roma in the 40th over.

The heat couldn’t keep St George from putting up a fight.
