Something for everyone in weekly events

KEEN runners from around the St George district marked one year of weekly park runs on Saturday, celebrating the social gatherings as a great way to get fit.

Run in cities and towns around the world, parkrun participants run free and weekly on timed five kilometre courses.

Parkrun St George event director Angela Garner said they are open to everyone.

“They are free, and are safe and easy to take part in.”

Since the first run in St George on December 2, 2017, 278 participants have completed 1,058 park runs.

“They have covered a total distance of 5,290 kilometres, including 273 new personal bests.

“50 individuals have also volunteered 231 times.”

On the special anniversary run on Saturday, 27 people ran, jogged or walked the course, including 11 who were first-timers, and two recorded personal bests.

“This week we had runners from Brisbane, Gold Coast, Toowoomba and Roma who had all travelled to participate in this event.

“We even had one participant, Brian Wippell, who travelled to St George to celebrate his 200th parkrun with us.”

Ms Garner said parkrun was important as it encourages people to get outside and have regular exercise.

“It also focuses on developing a community through the work of our volunteers, and participants who encourage each other along the way.

“It is a wonderful way to meet new people of all ages, and has also helped to boost tourism in St George, with many people travelling from outside the district just to take part in these weekly events.

Ms Garner said their group was always open to new recruits, with the events taking place each week, starting at the boat ramp on Saturdays from 7am.

“Thank you to all the event directors, volunteers, and parkrunners who have turned up each Saturday morning.

“Whether it be freezing, raining, or extremely hot weather to make our St George parkrun event so successful.

“It would be fantastic if we could get even more people involved in our second year.”
