Making a difference DELIVERING MEALS TO THE HOMELESS

How a group of volunteers were able to help vulnerable people during the pandemic

-

Founded in response to the level of homelessness in Southall, the Sikh charity Nishkam Swat helps disadvantaged communities all over the UK by offering food, clothing, sleeping bags and a healthcare service for people who don’t have a permanent address.

Since the pandemic began, the number of people using the service has increased, and 50,000 meals have been delivered by volunteers, to people who were vulnerable or shielding. Founder Randeep L Lall (above, pictured) explains; ‘Over the last 10 years, we’ve always looked for opportunities to help others and make a difference. When the pandemic came along, it became another opportunity for us to serve those in need.’

One of the volunteers talks about their experience with the charity: ‘A lady in her seventies from Ealing contacted us for help, and we now deliver two meals every day to her and her husband. Every time she receives a delivery, she’s in tears. The volunteer who regularly visits took milk and bread, too. She told us, “With every mouthful, we sent you our love.” Even with the safe, two-metre distance, our volunteers are creating bonds and relationships with the most vulnerable people in our society, who are lonely and have been affected by the pandemic.’

‘Life was never meant to be about earning fortunes and having everything. Our four priorities are protection, location, water and food. These recent events have made us realise how much some of us take them for granted every day.’ MV
