Chardonnay is probably the best known as well as the most widespread of all grapes varieties. Originally French, it’s now grown all over the world from New Zealand to England, and makes wines that can be opulent, oaky and buttery, or lean and piercing with everything in-between. If your last experience of this variety was something sweet and oak-chipped from the 1990s, then think again, as there’s a Chardonnay out there for everyone.

Wine expert Henry Jeffreys, along with the BBC Good Food team, selects all of the wines on offer to BBC Good Food readers. Henry writes about wine for The Guardian and The Spectator, and on his blog, worldofbooze.wordpress.com. He’s also a judge in the Best Drinks Producer category for the BBC Food and Farming Awards. His book,

The Home Bar (£25, Jacqui Small), is out now.
