SHARPEN YOUR KNIVES

When the weather cools, roast dinners become more inviting than ever – and a sharp knife is essential for safe, precise carving. Sharpen your knives before every use and, if you can, get them profession­ally sharpened once or twice a year to realign the razor-sharp edge. CLEAN BEHIND THE FRIDGE

Out of sight means out of mind – it’s the one kitchen chore we all forget about because we can’t see it, but this really should be done at least every few months. It’s not just the build-up of dust and grease that you’re clearing away, but the dropped bits of food that roll under the fridge too. These can rot and attract unwelcome pests such as flies and rodents, so it’s important to remove them regularly. Working quickly, unplug the fridge, pull it out completely, then vacuum any dust out of the exposed mechanics and go over any greasy build-up with hot, soapy water. Sweep or vacuum any food debris from the floor, then wash or mop the area. Plug the fridge back in and leave it closed for 30 minutes to come back to temperatur­e.
