Green habits for families
Food is a great place to start in helping your kids to care about the environment. Here are a few simple ways to help them think about what they throw away – you can lead by example.
Avoiding food waste
l Start minestrone Mondays. It’s a chance to empty all the ‘veg on the edge’ out of the fridge and add everything to a big soup.
l Freeze fruit in small chunks ready to blend into smoothies.
l Organise a leftovers shelf so nothing that needs eating up gets forgotten.
Not-so-fantastic plastic
l Carry a reusable water bottle when you’re out and about, then look out for water fountains or ask in a café if you can top it up.
l Always take reusable carrier bags with you when you shop
l Take empty containers with you to fill up in refill shops or zerowaste stores, which are popping up in lots of our towns and cities.
