Commonwealth Games
This year’s Games takes place in Birmingham (28 July-8 August). But while the Commonwealth is touted as a cause for unity and strength in some camps, it is often criticised by some member states and their diaspora for its roots in colonialism and being a remnant of the outdated empire.
When Barbados announced that it was becoming a republic last year, it triggered a domino effect of voices across other Caribbean nations calling for their withdrawal, too, including Jamaica. More than 50 countries are still part of the movement and it’s a good opportunity to learn more about other nations and Britain’s relationship with them. And, as ever, it makes a good learning opportunity for food. Commonwealth Games food party, anyone? Everyone brings a dish from a different participating nation. I’m choosing Jamaica, while I still can.
