The BBC Good Food Together Group is my go-to place to get food advice and tips from you, our community. I came across this question from Heather Gates and had to share:
‘Calling all those on the night shift! I’m a nurse working 12-hour shifts, from 7am to 7pm on two days, followed by two nights, then four or five days o. I’m really struggling to eat healthily when I’m working. What are your food strategies to keep yourself feeling good and well fed when you have a busy and unsocial work schedule?’
Junior doctor here! I make a weekly meal plan and shop accordingly so I have it all planned. If I’m on nights, I plan simple meals and cook them in batches so I can eat them for several shifts in a row. I prioritise lean protein and avoid eating too many simple carbs, and bring fruit and healthy snacks to keep me going. Laura Colacino
I used to eat a main meal just before I left for work, then used a food flask for soups or overnight oats. I’d also bring snacks like berries or chopped veg with hummus to snack on throughout my shift. Valerie Vile
