Support for big ideas

Businesses in Benalla and across North East Victoria are set to entice and empower entrepreneurs with the launch of Startup Shakeup.

Startup Shakeup is an initiative that supports local entrepreneurs with big ideas that create jobs and attract investment.

The program has been made viable thanks to a $400 000 grant from LaunchVic, the independent government agency responsible for developing Victoria’s start-up ecosystem.

Startup Shakeup is a collaboration between four local councils — Benalla, Indigo, Mansfield and Wangaratta — in partnership with Charles Sturt University, NE Tracks LLEN, and Goulburn Ovens Institute of TAFE.

The goal of the program is to help North East Victorian businesses to respond to fast paced changes and disruptions by developing and retaining skills to take advantage of new technologies and ways of working.

LaunchVic chief executive officer Kate Cornick said startups were among the largest contributors to job creation in Australia, significantly growing their contribution to the Australian economy in the past five years.

‘‘Ninety-seven per cent of Victorian start-ups are based in the Melbourne CBD. So our focus is to expand the opportunities for start-ups to be created anywhere in Victoria with the right support and ecosystem,’’ she said.

Program co-ordinator Emma Jones said Startup Shakeup was going to be the network for empowering entrepreneurs in North East Victoria through collaboration, education and inspiration.

‘‘People with the potential to create a start-up could come from anywhere in the community,’’ Ms Jones said.

‘‘Our approach is to create a welcoming local network where they’ll be supported to develop their business skills and ideas.

‘‘Through Startup Shakeup they can access like-minded people to pitch ideas, gain support from bright minds and potential investors, and really build momentum to get a side hustle off the ground and into the world.

‘‘It’s these gigs that have the potential to change a founder’s life, and the lives of countless others. That’s what start-ups are all about.’’
