Juniors excel at carnival
Benalla junior footballers Lachlan Boyle, Nathan Davies and Bode Stevens recently represented AFL North East Border in the under-15 V/Line Cup championships.
The boys competed against regional junior players from across the state in the four-day carnival, which was held across Latrobe City council.
All three boys received $200 from the Benalla Young Sportsperson Trust to help with the cost of competing.
Bode was named in the division one side, while Nathan and Lachlan lined up for division two.
Division one took out their first game of the carnival against Bendigo Pioneers 8.8 (56) to 3.2 (20), with Bode named one of the best players in the clash.
However, division two did not have the same luck, going down by 28 points to Bendigo.
In the second game, the division one team defeated Gippsland Power, with Bode again named among the best.
While in division two, the North East side narrowly secured the win, defeating Gippsland point.
They were also joined by Benalla girls Isabella Symes, Larissa Thomas, Madison Gray, Cassidy Mailer and Keeley Skepper, who was named vicecaptain of the NEB La Trobe University Bushrangers under-16s girls side.
The North East girls won their first game in the carnival against Gippsland Power convincingly, 12.9 (81) to 0.1 (1).
Madison and Keeley both kicked two goals for the day, with Keeley also named in the best.
The girls also took out their second game against the Southern Stingray’s, with Keeley awarded best on ground, followed by local teammates Isabella and Cassidy.
Isabella’s dad Damon said he was proud to see his daughter play in the carnival.
‘‘Girls footy is really taking off, which is great to see,’’ he said.
The V/Line Cup carnival is used as a stepping stone for the TAC Cup and TAC Cup Girls competitions. Power by one
