Bowman at helm of club
Benalla Swimming Club has recently appointed a new head coach, Gary Bowman.
Bowman grew up in the small country towns of Koondrook and Cohuna in north-central Victoria, next door to an outdoor pool where he spent his summers as a child.
With little opportunity to train or race, Bowman said this fuelled his interest in coaching swimming, while being able to offer something back to young country swimmers.
He has helped to foster a passion for swimming in young children through his teaching, with his previous coaching role being head coach at Kew Swimming Club.
Bowman’s interest in helping swimmers improve their technique led him to take up positions coaching squads of younger and older swimmers.
Initially working with the CA Tritons club in Bulleen, he developed a recreational swimming squad into a group of competitors — with many going on to compete at state and national level.
Bowman has developed a passion for ‘‘best practice’’ in coaching, and said he strove to improve his own knowledge and skills to pass onto his swimmers.
‘‘I’m interested in helping Benalla develop as a swimming club that caters for all interests in swimming, whether recreational, fitness or competitive swimming, providing opportunities including local club time trials, school, state and national level meets,’’ Bowman said.
The Benalla swim club would also like to recognise the many years of service provided by previous coach Libby Foubister, and thanked her for her tireless contribution fostering the talents of Benalla’s young swimmers.
The club has several squads with tailored programs to match the goals and fitness levels of each swimmer.
An entry-level squad is available for swimmers who have previously had swimming lessons and can swim reasonable freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke, with the main focus being improving and developing skills.
Young swimmers can ‘come and try’ swimming with the club in the first three weeks of the term on Wednesdays at 4.30 pm and Thursdays at 5 pm.
The club is also hoping to start an adult squad, to assist mature swimmers in developing and improving their technique.
