A family home was destroyed by fire in Baddaginnie on Thursday night.

An alarm was raised about 7 pm. However, despite the property being only three doors down from the local CFA station, nothing could be done to save it.

Detective Sergeant Shannon Murphy said that CFA and police arrived within five minutes. However, by that time the fire had spread to the roof and the house could not be saved.

‘‘The house appears to have caught on fire as a result of a faulty kitchen appliance . . . whilst three˘occupants were at home,’’ Det Sgt Murphy said.

‘‘They were able to identify that there was a fire due to smoke and also they could hear it, giving them the opportunity˘to flee the property.

‘‘They notified their mother who was nearby and she returned to the house with the other occupant and managed to retrieve their pets.’’

Det Sgt Murphy said even though the occupants were home and reacted quickly, as did emergency services, once a fire reached the roof it would become uncontrollable very quickly.

‘‘Because the occupants are often busy doing something else and don’t necessarily notice it immediately a fire can climb up the walls and into the roof, and that is what has happened here,’’ he said.

Police placed a crime guard on the property overnight and joined CFA investigators at 10.30 am on Friday.

They established the fire was not suspicious, identified the appliance as the start-point and the kitchen as the location from where it˘took hold.

The structure is totally destroyed and will need to be demolished. Police have secured the property with temporary fencing to stop unauthorised access until that can be done.

Inferno: It took a joint effort by several CFA crews to bring the fire under control.
