Plovers fight back

After com­ing off a loss to lad­der-leader Pos­sums in round seven, a fired-up Plovers fought back to post a coura­geous vic­tory over Wal­la­bies in round eight of A-grade pen­nant com­pe­ti­tion last week.

Con­fronted with the prospect of bow­ing out of the fi­nals race, Plovers came back hard, with Mick Kelly play­ing at his bril­liant best to lead his team to a 3-2 vic­tory over the higher-ranked Wal­la­bies.

He won both sin­gles in an in­spi­ra­tional per­for­mance to ease Plovers back into fourth spot on the lad­der.

He had strong sup­port from Daniel Dokka, who teamed well with Kelly to snare the dou­bles in a dra­matic 21-23, 21-16, 21-19 marathon.

Wal­la­bies’ Ash­ley Duns and Rob Ersk­ine were in top form to win a sin­gles each, but un­for­tu­nately struck Kelly at his best.

In an­other close con­test, Rosel­las put in an out­stand­ing per­for­mance to post a 3-2 vic­tory over Echid­nas in a high-stan­dard af­fair.

Adrian Squires was the stand­out, play­ing im­pres­sively to win both sin­gles in straight sets. He then teamed with Michelle Feldt­mann to score a 20-22, 21-16, 21-19 come­from-be­hind dou­bles vic­tory to get the team over the line.

Top-team Pos­sums showed off their bril­liance with a con­vinc­ing 5-0 vic­tory over an out-of-form Kook­abur­ras.

Cooper Ir­win and Stephen Lane were all class, com­pletely out­play­ing their op­po­si­tion to win all their matches in style.

Mean­while, an ex­cited Taipans unit fol­lowed on from their win in the pre­vi­ous round to score a com­fort­able 4-1 vic­tory over the more-fan­cied Owls.

Vet­eran, Col Ex­ton showed what the game is all about, de­fy­ing the op­po­si­tion to win both sin­gles in tough three set­ters.

He was un­beat­able on the back­hand side and suc­cess­fully mixed speed and con­trol into his game plan in a su­perb per­for­mance.

Team­mate Ga­van Crothers was in fine touch, win­ning a sin­gles be­fore com­bin­ing with Ex­ton for a straight-sets dou­bles vic­tory.

B-grade

A de­ter­mined Red­backs out­fit had to pro­duce their best to hold off Wom­bats, fi­nally pre­vail­ing for a hard-fought 3-2 vic­tory.

John Spencer pro­duced ex­cep­tional form to ac­count for a sin­gles in style.

Team­mate Pauline Hooper gave a sparkling dis­play to win a tight sin­gles clash be­fore pair­ing with Spencer for a com­fort­able dou­bles vic­tory.

Ray Grant was the star of the match, play­ing strongly to claim both sin­gles in tough con­tests.

Lad­der-leader Num­bats put on an out­stand­ing dis­play to edge out Mozzies for a close 3-2 vic­tory.

Carol Perry con­tin­ued her good form, play­ing with pur­pose to win both sin­gles in easy fash­ion.

She had strong sup­port from Si­enna Ir­win who was in fine touch to win the de­cid­ing sin­gles to seal the match.

In an­other close con­test, Ni­cole Ir­win led Bul­lants to a thrilling 3-2 vic­tory over Ea­gles.

She was at her best in win­ning both sin­gles in a su­perb per­for­mance.

She was strongly sup­ported by Heather Craw­ford who rose to the oc­ca­sion, com­bin­ing well with Ir­win for a straight-sets dou­bles vic­tory to take the match. Hen­ning Aretz and Matt Parkin­son played well for Ea­gles, tak­ing a sin­gles each in style.

Frogs were on top of their game to over­come Glid­ers for a tough 4-1 vic­tory.

While Brian Perry showed glimpses of his old form to win both sin­gles, Kaleb Lis­senden was en­joy­ing his hard-fought sin­gles vic­tory in a fine per­for­mance.

They teamed well to take out the dou­bles in a tight match.

C-grade

Crick­ets just held out a Koalas for a close 3-2 vic­tory.

Jack­son Squires starred, win­ning both sin­gles clashes be­fore join­ing forces with Ann De­gan for a close three-set dou­bles vic­tory.

Rae Spencer and Geral­dine Moloney played strongly to win a sin­gles each.

Hawks just held out Doves in a tight clash, even­tu­ally win­ning 3-2.

Paul Wat­son was in top form to ac­count de­ter­mined for both sin­gles, be­fore team­ing with Archer Ir­win for a closely fought dou­bles win. Kaye Grosser and El­liot McCal­lum played ex­tremely well to win a sin­gles each for Doves.

A chirpy Mag­pies unit had an easy 5-0 vic­tory over Fal­cons, with He­len Sharp and An­drea Cath­cart per­form­ing well to win all their matches com­fort­ably.
