Benalla Ensign - - Benalla Festival 2018 -

As part of the 2018 Be­nalla Fes­ti­val, bud­ding lo­cal writ­ers were in­vited to en­ter a poem or a piece of writ­ing on the Fes­ti­vals theme —‘‘Our Back­yard . . . cel­e­brat­ing our spe­cial places and spa­ces’’.

An awards cer­e­mony was held at Be­nalla Li­brary last Thurs­day.

The room was packed with ex­cited kids and their fam­i­lies as Be­nalla Ru­ral City Coun­cil­lor Barb Alexan­der an­nounced the win­ners and pre­sented prizes.

The com­pe­ti­tion was bro­ken up into age cat­e­gories and the win­ners were: Years 3/4 Win­ners: 1st Prize $140 — Ad­di­son Mont­gomery 2nd Prize $70 — Liza Askew 3rd Prize - $30 — Sarah Bradley 4th Prize - $20 — Meg Evans Years 5/6 Win­ners: 1st Prize $140 — Rachael Fowles 2nd Prize $70 — Lily Walka­day 3rd Prize - $30 — Sam Be­g­ley 4th Prize - $20 — Ab­bie Simp­son Years 7/8 Win­ners: 1st Prize $140 — Oliver Hall 2nd Prize $70 — Ellen Sam­brell 3rd Prize - $30 — Paige Easter­brook Years 9/10 Win­ners: 1st Prize $140 — Lily May Free­mans 2nd Prize $70 — Zoe Davis 3rd Prize $30 — Ge­or­gia Brom­ley Open sec­tion Win­ners: 1st Prize $200 — Lee Wal­ter 2nd Prize $120 — Carla Gard­ner 3rd Prize - $80 — Betty Mil­li­gan

Due to the high stan­dard of en­tries the judges also awarded Highly Com­mended Awards in all sec­tions.

Highly Com­mended en­tries went to Amelia Keen, Keira Bekins, Erin Jenk­ins, Ella Mon­aghan, Kayleigh Bur­field, Isaac Ma­son, Eliz­a­beth Hawke, Kieran El­liot, Flynn Weeks, Mia Ham, Aadarsho Deo, Abbey Pearce, and the Res­i­dents of Cooinda.
