Creative writing awarded
As part of the 2018 Benalla Festival, budding local writers were invited to enter a poem or a piece of writing on the Festivals theme —‘‘Our Backyard . . . celebrating our special places and spaces’’.
An awards ceremony was held at Benalla Library last Thursday.
The room was packed with excited kids and their families as Benalla Rural City Councillor Barb Alexander announced the winners and presented prizes.
The competition was broken up into age categories and the winners were: Years 3/4 Winners: 1st Prize $140 — Addison Montgomery 2nd Prize $70 — Liza Askew 3rd Prize - $30 — Sarah Bradley 4th Prize - $20 — Meg Evans Years 5/6 Winners: 1st Prize $140 — Rachael Fowles 2nd Prize $70 — Lily Walkaday 3rd Prize - $30 — Sam Begley 4th Prize - $20 — Abbie Simpson Years 7/8 Winners: 1st Prize $140 — Oliver Hall 2nd Prize $70 — Ellen Sambrell 3rd Prize - $30 — Paige Easterbrook Years 9/10 Winners: 1st Prize $140 — Lily May Freemans 2nd Prize $70 — Zoe Davis 3rd Prize $30 — Georgia Bromley Open section Winners: 1st Prize $200 — Lee Walter 2nd Prize $120 — Carla Gardner 3rd Prize - $80 — Betty Milligan
Due to the high standard of entries the judges also awarded Highly Commended Awards in all sections.
Highly Commended entries went to Amelia Keen, Keira Bekins, Erin Jenkins, Ella Monaghan, Kayleigh Burfield, Isaac Mason, Elizabeth Hawke, Kieran Elliot, Flynn Weeks, Mia Ham, Aadarsho Deo, Abbey Pearce, and the Residents of Cooinda.
