Rain plays havoc with matches

Rain during the week caused many cricket games on Saturday to be cancelled and postponed.

The only matches played by the Benalla Bushrangers were the C-grade and under-12 games, with C-grade playing Beechworth Wanderers at the Arundel St Road ground, while the under-12s travelled to Tarrawingee to play Ovens Valley United Black.

Bushie’s C-grade was in trouble early at Arundel St after batting first and losing Mitch Cullen for four and Nick Jacobs for three.

Phil Begnone and Steve McCallum put on 20 runs before McCallum played one onto his stumps after making 19 runs.

Next out was Grayson Kirk for two, with the Bushies not looking too bad at 4/69- however, the tail was cleaned up cheaply to be all out for 80.

Begnone top scored with 22 and Josh Ormand made 10.

Beechworth lost four wickets in the run chase as they passed the required total in the 23rd over.

McCallum took 3/36 while Ormand, Dom Buckley and Mitch Cullen also got a wicket each.

This Saturday the C-grade side takes on Rovers United Bruck at home in Benalla.

Under-12

The Under-12s lost a close game against OVU Black at Tarrawingee. Batting first, the youngest of the Bushies made 5/74 from their 20 overs.

Openers Seth Arnold and Bayleigh Dervish got the side off to a solid start before Arnold was bowled for five with the score on 21.

The other batters in the line-up kept the score ticking over as Jonty Priest top scored, retiring not out on 15 and Dervish went on to make 11.

Oscar Ring was solid as a rock to be not out for five, while Will Botten, Harley Brown and Mitch Cooney did a great job to see off some good bowling.

With the ball in hand, the Bushies were excellent with just 11 extras bowled — an improvement on previous weeks.

But the OVU Black side did not lose a wicket in its innings and finished with 88 runs on the board.

The club said all of the Bushies’ bowlers did a great job and continue to develop their cricketing skills.

This Saturday the under-12s take on Rovers United Bruck Blue at the Arundel St road-end ground.
