No match for Gators

-

The Benalla Breakers were no match for the Shepparton Gators on Sunday for round eight of the North East Men’s CBL competition.

In what Breaker’s coach Wally Armstrong described as ‘‘the worst performance so far,’’ Benalla took an 88-43 point loss to the Gators at the Shepparton Sports Stadium.

Shepparton broke out of the gates after quarter time to outdo the newly formed Benalla side, who are still waiting for their first win of the season.

But there was some glimmering moments of hope for the Breakers, with Sam Mickelson continuing his good form to top score for Benalla, while Riley Kego played his best game so far.

Coach Armstrong said the team was simply outclassed.

‘‘We should have been more competitive,’’ Armstrong said.

‘‘It is our first season and it’s not a long season so we will learn from our losses and keep training.

‘‘Hopefully we can improve and take a win somewhere along the way.’’

The Breakers now have a week off before meeting Wodonga before the Christmas break.

In other basketball news, the under-18 and under-14 boys teams had VJBL games on Friday night, with locals Cooper Nichols, Thomas Hill and Zach Schluter in action.

The Benalla men’s next game will be played on Saturday December 15 at 8 pm at the Wodonga Sports and Leisure Centre.
