PAGE 10—‘Benalla Ensign’, Wednesday, December 5, 2018 www.benallaensign.com.au The Anzac Commemorative Working Party is contributing a regular column — Coo-ee — highlighting events in Benalla’s history. In the 1870s, Benalla’s two medical men, Dr Nicholson and Dr Henry, took leave at different times, so as not to leave the town without a doctor. However, it sometimes happened that one or indeed both would be called away to attend an emergency. If that happened, anyone dying in circumstances that, by law, required an autopsy or a coroner’s inquest had to be kept unburied to await Dr Henry’s return. Appointed in October 1870, Dr Henry was the Benalla’s Deputy LETTER TO THE EDITOR Enjoyable trip down memory lane I had the recent good fortune to borrow, from Benalla Library, a book entitled written by local identity, Milko; Dear Milkman, Charlie Castles. It is a slim volume that covers his family history and the operation of Castle’s Barkly Dairy from the late 1940s through the ’50s and ’60s. As a Wangaratta district teenager from that era, I remember Charlie as a talented bike rider competing at the ANA Weekend carnival. Richie, his younger bother, was a footballer with Benalla. Each chapter begins with a note from a customer that had been left for them on their milk rounds and many of these are hilarious. Charlie shares a wealth of fascinating stories from a time when Benalla had three dairies and milk was home delivered daily by horse and cart. I was enthralled and read the book in one sitting. Thanks Charlie, for a very enjoyable trip down memory lane. star — Bruce Walker, Goomalibee OPINION POLICY THIS WEEK’S SPECIALS $46 $40 Save $9 Save $11 Top spoils Pebbles Barks Road base Toppings Firewood Sands Aggregates Feature rocks Mulch Crusher dust Conmix Great Northern Super Crisp Cans 30pk Miller Chill $46 $46 Save $8 Save $8 come on in and browse – you will be amazed Carlton Dry Slabs Carlton Draught Slabs Address: 88/90 Bridge St E, Benalla VIC 3672 5762 7557 Phone: Please drink responsibly.
