Future looks bright

- By Georgia Smith

The culmination of a year of hard work and studying all comes down to this moment.

ATARs were released to students throughout Victoria on Friday, and none were quite as happy as Benalla FCJ College Dux Jazzy Burke.

Receiving an exceptional ATAR score of 98.65, life after school is looking bright for the high achiever.

‘‘I was so nervous, it took me ages to fall asleep the night before,’’ Jazzy said.

‘‘For me it was never really about getting Dux, it was about doing well and getting the score I needed to get into my course. ‘‘I just wanted to do my personal best.’’ Jazzy has already started putting plans into place for next year, hoping to start a doubledegree in science and engineering at Monash University.

While Jazzy did not quite expect to receive the score she got, she had an inkling that she was in a good position to do well.

‘‘I did an ATAR calculator back at the start of Year 11 and it was almost exactly the same as my score, but I didn’t actually think I would get that,’’ Jazzy said.

She was not the only student to do well on results day, with Sarah Bismire named proxime accessit for FCJ College with an ATAR score of 89.3.

‘‘I wanted to get an 80 to get into a Bachelor of Arts at Melbourne University,’’ Sarah said. ‘‘I was very excited when I saw my score. ‘‘Your ATAR doesn’t define you, at the end of the day if you have done your best what else can you do?’’

Sarah is now set to spend next year in England working in a boarding school, but not before she celebrates her score with her family over her favourite meal — a rack of lamb.

FCJ College principal Joanne Rock said the school was proud of both girls.

‘‘They have worked really hard and both of them deserve the score they got,’’ Ms Rock said.

‘‘They have been great role models to the rest of the student population.

‘‘They are going to be an asset to society once they work out what they want to do, they are both change agents and people that want to make things happen.

‘‘I know they have a great grounding and will make the right choice and create some positive change in the world around them.’’
