National MPs launch internship

-

Young people from the Euroa and Nicholls electorates are being encouraged to apply for the Bourchier Internship, a new parliamentary program hosted by Nationals MPs Damian Drum and Steph Ryan.

The internship offers one young person the chance to spend a sitting week in the Federal Parliament in Canberra with Federal Member for Nichols Mr Drum and the Victorian Parliament in Melbourne with State Member for Euroa Ms Ryan to learn more about the parliamentary process.

‘‘Understanding how parliamentary and political processes work can be daunting,’’ Ms Ryan said.

“We want to share our knowledge and build the skills of young people to help them become advocates for their local communities.

“Damian and I believe the opportunity to represent your community in Parliament — whether it’s the state or federal parliament — is an enormous privilege and we want to skill young people in understanding how they can be a positive force for change in their own community.”

The Bourchier Internship is open to residents of either the federal electorate of Nicholls or state electorate of Euroa who are aged between 18 and 25 years.

Mr Drum said the internship provided an opportunity for a first-hand look into how Parliament operated at a state and federal level.

“We invite all young people who care about the future of our region to apply,” Mr Drum said.

“Getting involved in politics is a great way for young people to make a real difference and I encourage anyone interested in politics to apply for this inaugural internship position.

“Experiences such as this are rare and invaluable, particularly for younger people who are looking to become leaders and advocates in their local community.”

The internship has been named after former Country

Party leader Sir Murray Bourchier.

Sir Murray was famed for his role at the Battle of Beersheba, where he led his men of mainly locals at full gallop over three kilometres into Turkish entrenchments and on for a further three kilometres into Beersheba to capture vital wells.

After the war, he was elected the Member for Goulburn Valley and later became Victoria’s deputy premier during which time he was a fierce advocate for the communities he represented and for rural interests.
