Hard third round

Round 3, Goulburn Valley Hockey Associatio­n (GVHA) season was a tough round, with all players running hard and the warm day proving why hockey is a winter sport.

Benalla’s Under-10 side played a fun round-robin carnival of short, five-a-side quarter field games in their first competitio­n for 2021.

Mooroopna started them off, with all players rotating positions.

Finn Thompson made space and lead forwards for some good options out of Abby Thannhause­r’s tackles.

Experience­d player Liam Carroll defended well and pushed the team forward, also scoring the first goal.

Jack Hurley snuck in a second goal to make the win, 2:0.

Benalla found their feet against Strikers with some fast play.

Gossamer Bowman had some good runs and Emma Moore made a magnificen­t takeover steal to turn the play around.

Despite improved they lost 0:3.

The final game against Euroa allowed the whole team on the field for some fun hockey.

Emma was fantastic as a full back, saving four goals on the line.

Liam made great passes, Goss and Jack defended well and Abby and Finn tackled well, but they succumbed to the faster Euroa, losing 0:10.

Under-12 Benalla:

Benalla was well matched against Goulburn Valley Grammar School (GVGS), which pushed hard early.

Goalie Eli DeBona made some fantastic saves, helped by Jacinta Woodward and Zac Fennell to hold the score as nil-all at half time.

Angus Woodward ran well, assisted by Erin Jenkins who made great turnovers and play through the midfield, earning three umpire votes.

Jack Hurley did some great tackling in his first game, alternatin­g with Liam Carroll and Jack Chittick on the wing.

GVGS consolidat­ed in the second half, scoring two quick goals to take the win 2:0.

Benalla

Charlie Grimwade and Sarah Farley played Echuca at Echuca Secondary College in a fast and grueling game.

With a full team and bench, Echuca took the win 3:0 in front of a home crowd.

Seniors B-Women

Benalla put in a strong defence on Saturday against SYC.

With Benalla scoreless SYC played a strong attacking game winning 4-0, which kept Benalla’s backline busy.

Prue White completing some spectacula­r saves as goalie throughout the game to keep it low scoring.

Bree Harris, Bec Littler and Georgie White cleared most of the play towards the Benalla forward line; with Suzanne Wright and Heidi Perry creating excellent positions to receive the ball.

Many of the team’s younger players consolidat­ed their skills with Lucia De Bona, Eloise MacDonald, Amber Armstrong and Jacinta Woodward passing and taking the ball up the wing and into the circle for Benalla.
