Spectacular Valuable tool AFLGM launches cutting-edge coaching model

- By Liam Nash

AFL Goulburn Murray is bringing an outdated training model into the 21st century with the launch of its online Regional Coaching Group.

As an interactive tool angled at providing community coaches visual content accessible via sharing application Hudl, training sessions are filmed and edited into relative segments for community coaches to use.

With the organisation’s research library dating back five years, AFL Victoria football development manager Daniel Preston labelled the model ‘‘valuable and resourceful’’.

‘‘The platform was put together in conjunction with Mark Brown of the Murray Bushrangers done with AFL Victoria,’’ Preston said.

‘‘There are plenty of lessons which are useful to community coaches of all levels, using the varying levels of coaching within the Murray Bushrangers.

‘‘It is about bridging the gap for community coaches with NAB League level application, focusing on development.’’

Launched at the start of July, Preston noted there was an aim to upload a new video every 10 days.

The introduction of Game Vision, where different scenarios, positional play and other activities are translated into a match situation, gives coaches and players valuable insight into how to carry training ground exercises onto the park.

But perhaps the greatest asset of the Regional Coaching Group is its convenience.

“It is even more relative at the moment with face-toface workshops becoming harder and harder to plan due to coronavirus,” Preston said.

“This provides the opportunity to upskill from home.”

Although the project has been on the cards for about 12 months, the launch has continually been pushed back due to the evolving coronavirus climate.

But not anymore. Preston is pleased to see the plan finally reach fruition.

“The idea behind the program fundamentally was about getting community coaches online, creating a platform to pick up where the traditional regional coaching groups have ceased and make it modern,’’ he said.

‘‘It is a great tool for any aspiring coach. No matter the level, there is something they can get out of it.’’
