More than 200 kids enjoy come and try day
More than 200 excited children and their families participated in fun activities at Tomorrow Today’s recent come and try day.
Twenty-one sport and recreation clubs attended the event, held across three venues in the Ackerley Ave sports precinct.
The day included a variety of sessions for high-energy sports and activities including:
• Auskick;
• Football;
• Badminton;
• Baseball;
• Basketball;
• Cricket;
• Hockey;
• Junior Fire Brigade;
• Tennis;
• Netball;
• Squash;
• Table tennis, and
• Taekwondo.
Those complimented some hands-on activities, which were provided by:
• Benalla Astronomy;
• Benalla Guides;
• Brick by Brick, and
• Room at the Table.
Tomorrow Today’s student engagement and transitions coordinator Alex Ross said younger children were catered for by the Benalla Leos club, Benalla Rural City Council and North Eastern
Archers, which were available to answer questions about activities for children and young people.
“It was such a thrill to feel the energy and joy experienced by the children and families at the Come and Try Day,” Ms Ross said.
“We are so grateful to the many dedicated volunteers from our local clubs and groups for providing such a wonderful opportunity for children and young people to try a new activity.
“It was terrific to see so many parents joining in the activities and also showing an interest in supporting local sport and
recreation clubs.”
Most children tried at least eight activities and some even managed to try all activities on offer.
Benalla Rural City Council sponsored a shuttle bus, which was appreciated at the end of the event by families with children with weary legs.
Tomorrow Today’s executive officer Rosie Koop said the Rotary Club of Benalla cooked more than 300 sausages to feed the hungry participants.
“The come and try day is a great example that generosity and community spirit are alive and well in
Benalla,” Ms Koop said.
“We hope the event helps to reinvigorate participation in sports and recreation activities, after two COVID-affected years.”
