Saints win second in a row

- By James Kleeman

Benalla’s A-grade netballers have continued their winning ways, accounting for Mansfield on the Eagles’ home court 59-25 at the weekend.

The side backed up a strong 41-33 win over Tatura in round two.

New recruit Sally Washfold stepped up for the visitors to spearhead the scoring — barely missing a shot on the day.

Chloe Hill was superb across the Saints’ defence yet again, coming up with crucial intercepts to ensure Mansfield couldn’t get a foothold in the game.

Benalla’s B-grade and under17s sides also took home points at Mansfield, with Natalie Pritchard, Georgie Uebergang and Chelsea Walsh among the standouts in B-grade’s hardfought 48-38 win, while young guns Charlie Bromley, Gemma Mathieson and Mia Matthews were the stars of the under-17s’ dominant 51-28 win.

In football action, Mansfield remains undefeated in the Goulburn Valley League; the Eagles producing a goal-fest at home to see off a gallant

Benalla side.

The ladder-leaders turned it on against the undermanned Saints, with a 51-point-tonothing second quarter the turning point.

Benalla battled strongly throughout the game, however the visitors’ efforts did not translate to the scoreboard, with Mansfield coming away with a mammoth 22.16 (148) to 5.5 (35) victory.

Chris Welsh put in a shift through the middle, while James Martiniello and Jake Pallpratt also worked tirelessly.

Tom Downie stepped into the Saints’ back six for his first game of the season, managing to get on the score sheet in his first game back.

The Saints’ under-18s outfit also went down to a strong Mansfield; Ryley Ely, Liam Curtis, Colby Mathieson, Charlie Burfield and Liam Thivillier-Lefebvre battled hard for the visitors.

Despite going down to reigning premier Nathalia in round three of Northern Country Women’s League, the women’s football outfit can take plenty of positives from the 14.10 (94) to 2.2 (14) defeat.
