ZAK IMPRESSES TO MAKE SOLO SUPERCARS DEBUT

- By JAMES KLEEMAN

Super2 Series leader Zak Best will strap in for his solo Supercars Championship debut in June at the Darwin Triple Crown.

Best will drive a fifth Tickford Racing Ford Mustang as a wildcard entry.

The Benalla speedster made his Supercars debut at the 2021 Bathurst 1000, in which he finished 15th, balancing competing alongside co-driver Jack Le Brocq.

But he will suit up solo for the Great Race in October this year, completing a threeround Supercars stint.

“I’m pumped to be joining the Supercars grid as a wildcard later this year,” Best said.

“It’s really cool to take this step with Tickford Racing and I’m looking forward to getting out there and having a crack.

Best has been in red-hot form in this year’s Super2 series, collecting his second Super2 career win in Sydney last month.

“I’ve been with Tickford for a little over a year now and we’ve covered a lot of ground in that time, the next step really is to get into the main game and see how we go,” Best said.

“Obviously the goal will be to just do the best I can, so I’m training hard and preparing in the best way I can to make sure I’m ready to go — I can’t wait.”

Tickford Racing CEO and Team Principal Tim Edwards said he was eager to see Best work his magic on the big stage.

“Zak has impressed us at pretty much every turn since he joined the team, both in our Super2 program and as a co-driver last year,” he said.

“It’s easy to forget Zak’s only been driving for us a little over a year, he’s had a lot thrown at him in that time and has taken it all in (his) stride.”

Best joined Tickford in the Super2 Series last year, finishing second in his first season with the squad.

Before he takes to the track at Darwin in June, Best will continue his Super2 campaign this Friday, April 29, at Perth SuperNight.
