Buykx latest to exhibit in art gallery shop
The Benalla Art Gallery shop exhibitions are proving popular with visitors, and providing local artists an opportunity to show their work.
The latest exhibit, by Benalla’s Susie Buykx, Teepee Fired Pots, is a seductive exhibition of ceramics.
The exhibition, which will feature throughout May, is an elegant body of lightweight pots which strongly reflect the atmospheric qualities of a north-east Victorian sunset as the seasons change.
Susie Buykx has lived in north-east Victoria for many years. She was introduced to pottery some time ago and has undertaken short courses as the dictates of her life have permitted.
However, she is largely self-taught. She has attended workshops and day classes to hone her skills and has shown her pots at the Victorian Craft Centre.
Ms Buykx spoke about the development and inspiration for her works.
“Whilst bush walking the natural colours and lines of the country of north-east Victoria, together with the changing hues of the grazing country and bush land are a constant source of inspiration,” Ms Buykx said.
“Whilst travelling overseas in later years I visited many potters in France and Spain and was inspired by the natural affinity they had for their local heritage and landscape.
“One of my favourite styles is teepee firing (fire restrictions permitting).
“These pots were fired at my son’s property in the Warrenbayne hills.
“The use and love of clay, put simply, is a passion.”
Benalla Art Gallery director Eric Nash said the new Gallery Shop exhibition by Ms Buykx was another example of the creative talent within our region,
“I’m sure the works will be well loved by visitors,” Mr Nash said.
In January Benalla Art Gallery announced a process for artists of the region to apply for rotational, monthly exhibitions in the Gallery Shop glass cabinets.
The new program is designed to better promote and support local and regional creative practices.
Ms Buykx’s new exhibition follows previous successful Gallery Shop exhibitions by Pauline Fraser, Maggie Hollins, and Lorna Hobbs.
